fears and tears

There's nothing that comes straight to my mind when concerning fears and tears. Except maybe being unemployed and washing dishes as my father suggests, or ghost stories (I didn't realize it was night when I watched 'Ghost Hunt' anime.. and it's seriously scary!), and I have a mild case of fear of snakes and 'dangerous' animals in face to face encounters of them.

Usually I don't actually keep my mind on the scary parts. I just ignore them. That's how I deal with most of the stuff, ignore and forget. So when there was a cobra in our backyard at home and mom was screaming and my little brother (the poor innocent soul) wanted to go see it, I was the one who was convinced to get a stick and do 'something'. What exactly my mother was expecting me to do, I had no idea. I was just as scared as she was, except I chose to ignore it while she didn't.

When my hip began to hurt badly and my dad said after checking the x-rays that my spine was angling, I chose to ignore the fear that I will end up like my cousin, who had the same genetic sickness and now she's paralyzed after too many mistakes in her spinal operations.

When I do actually get reduced to tears from my fears, I take one minute, cry and scream my heart out, and then again.. I ignore my fears.

Alice in underland?

The new 'Alice in wonderland' was a letdown.. I was so pumped up to watch the movie after reading the news and the huge buzz it made.. i thought it might be the next 'avatar' or something but damn.. it was surprisingly stupid..

Johnny Depp with his mad mad hat, Anna Hathaway with her floating and queenly act and Helena Bonham Carter as an evil queen were awesome! But the supposedly main character of Alice was so.. bland.. in her emotional outburst she looked like she was reciting a boring play in high school. The 3-D was good.. especially during the cliche last stand and speedy movements.. but I thought it would have a better plot..

And it was VERY un-realistic.. if we're going by the time frame showed in the movie rejecting a proposal and running off in the middle of the said proposal was blasphemy and you would be a social outcast before you even know it.. and the 'independent woman' theme was not in that time.. women were considered to be men's partners; staying at home, watching after the kids, cooking and tending to her husband's needs and that's all.. they were NEVER allowed to partake in business as far as I know and going to China all alone without an 'escort' was social suicide..

I can't believe I wasted $20 for that.. the only good thing in that movie was the cheshire cat and Mad Hatter.. *sigh*

The soil is red from the blood that has been spilled on this country

"The soil is red from the blood that has been spilled on this country" - Colonel Coetzee, 'Blood Diamond'.

"Blood Diamond" (2006)
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, Jennifer Connelly, Arnold Vosloo, Michael Sheen
Directed by: Edward Zwick
Produced by: Len Amato, Benjamin Waisbren, Kevin De La Noy

"Blood diamond (also called a converted diamond, conflict diamond, hot diamond or a war diamond) refers to a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance an insurgency, invading army's war efforts, or a warlord's activity, usually in Africa." - Wikipedia.org

The movie 'Blood Diamond', resolving about the blood diamond mining, smuggling and exporting in Sierra Leone during the civil war in 1999 depicts the truth, or a version of truth that people who actually buy the diamond doesn't seem to know. The movie with it's gory and shocking blood spilling, intense war action, explanations of history and situations and brief romance of Danny Archer (Dicaprio) and Maddy Bowen (Connelly), is a good movie made of the truth that was seen in Africa during the nineties civil war.

The story starts with Solomon Vandy (Housou) who is a fisherman living with his wife and three children in an outskirt village; and he wants his son, Dia, to learn english to be able to go to college. One day the village is attacked by the rebel forces which kills or captures almost everyone in the village. Any strong man in the village was taken to a diamond mining field, where Solomon ends up next and his family escapes.

While mining in a shallow river Soloman finds himself a very rare and large pink diamond. When he was trying to hide it the army forces attack the mining facility and he's taken to jail. While in jail one of the rebel officers who had seen Soloman trying hide the diamond announces to everyone in jail that Soloman has hidden the blood diamond.

And this is heard by Danny Archer (DiCaprio) who was caught when trying to smuggle diamonds across to Liberia. When he hears this he bails out Solomon and gets out too. Soloman finds a job and Archer tries to settle his muck up of the last set of diamonds when he meets Bowen, an american journalist trying to find the truth of diamond industry and Van de Kaap company which deals heavily in diamonds. Archer refuses to be a source for her and they part company.

Archer then finds Soloman and tries to convince him to tell him where he hid the diamond, during that conversation the army and rebels have a showdown and they escape together with a pact that Soloman will tell where the diamond is if Archer helps him find his missing family.

After escaping Archer tries to get Bowen's help to find Soloman's family. Bowen helps him in exchange for information on Van de Caap and Archer's name as a source. After Soloman sees his family in a refugee camp in Guinea he tells Archer where he hid the diamond and the three of them decide to go to Colonel Coetzee, the man who had taken in Archer and introduced him to diamond smuggling.

During their way to Colonel, along with some other journalists they get attacked by more rebels and are forced to flee. Also during this time we get what Dia is up to with the rebel forces; with drugs, alcohol, violence and brainwashing Dia doesn't stand a chance. Soloman, Archer and Bowen end up in a house that aids children taken from the rebels and with the help of the teacher they end up going to the mercenary forces led by Colonel.

There Bowen gets information from Archer and their romance intensifies but Bowen ends up leaving. Archer learns that Colonel plans to attack Sierra Leone to take back control. This was actually true; it refers to the 1995 hiring of South African security firm 'Executive Outcomes' by the government of Sierra Leone.

Archer decides to get the diamond on his own and with Soloman, they escape. They trek their way to the mine Soloman worked in. They reach the mine and find out that it's under rebel force control. Soloman finds his son and Archer attacks the rebel oss but Colonel and his forces jump in too. After a three-way fighting Soloman finds the diamond but Archer gets shot. After another two different fights where Soloman convinces his son to regain in innocence and Archer kills the Colonel. After contacting his pilot Archer manages to get them a ride.

But Archer is unable to make it to the helicopter due to his wound and tells Soloman and Dia to go and hands Soloman the diamond back. After the helicopter leaves Archer calls Bowen and asks a last favor to help Soloman and dies. Soloman travels to London where he sells the diamond with Bowen's help and reunites with his family. Bowen writes her article with Archer's information and Soloman describes his experience in Kimberly, South Africa. This speech is referred to a real situation where the 'Kimberley Process Certification Scheme' was made; which seeks to certify the origin of diamonds in order to curb the trade in blood diamonds.

The movie is compelling and heartfelt but I find some situations and connections to be very cliche and too 'movie-like' to be only coincidence. But after I watched this movie I got to know about the diamond trade. DiCaprio's acting as a me-first mercenary is very good and Hounsou as a father-first is very convincing too. Connelly doesn't appear much in the movie but her steadfast approach as a journalist out to get her sources help out both Archer and Solomon; Colonel (Vosloo) acts as the best evil man.

What's so good about spring break?

Being a college international student in Kirksville and being broke on top of it sucks really REALLy badly.. my ramen ran out and I'm currently trying to live off fruit loops because I'm too lazy to go to wal-mart and buy something.. i hate cooking because my apartment will start to stink and I really don't want to keep the door open for half an hour.

And I think I'll die from cholesterol like my dad says because I don't exercise but keep eating fatty food. He's the one who suggested I drink OIL to get some meat on my bones! But alas.. I think I probably have some disorder that keeps me from getting fat.. but as one of my cousins said all the fat will probably come and bite me in the near future and bloat me to look like Aunt Marge from HP (I really hope not.. if that happens I promise myself to run a mile everyday!)

I have numerous essays to write and three movies to watch and write a critique about.. two historical movies and the critique for journalism (I don't mind it because I like Blood Diamond; but I really don't want to watch 'Last of the Mohicans'! T_T)

And I'm slacking off on my trig h/w.. again.. and I have too many bad memories of MML.. I really need to find a hobby that will get me off the damn computer chair before I go even more blind from staring at the laptop screen; or god forbid I die from too much sleep. (I managed to sleep 24 hrs non stop! A new record!)

P.S- Any Naruto readers there? Sasuke is so DUMB!!! If he's supposed to be so smart and powerful he should think with his brain at least once in his lifetime! I just hate hate hate hate him!!! And that makes me hate Naruto too.. going after him like a damn lost puppy.. not to mention Sakura! URGH!!!

I have you on my hitlist!!!

Anyone who has read my previous posts about MML and how much I hate it must know of my semester long hatred of it. I admit some of it was because of my own ignorance and reluctance to do trigonometry homework; BUT as I have heard from my fellow sufferers from this dam* hybrid of mathematics and internet MML IS HELL!!!!

I heard that some of them print out the assignments and does it by hand and then put the answers on MML later. I thought of trying it because MML was getting on my nerves so much. But I'm a very lazy bum and don't want all that troublesome work. So I'm going to keep cursing MML while doing homework and eating chocolate. (No more juice because I ruined my last beloved laptop after spilling juice on it)

And I hope to every god that Winona university doesn't use MML for calculus because I have to take it next semester and I WILL NOT do my homework on MML. EVER!!
(And Caples is so nice he'll let me do the homework after it closes down after the time runs out and I slack off. But i don't think there's another math professor like him... maybe he should transfer to winona and teach Calculus so I can get an A.)

And whoever made MML, beware because when I find you by some unfortunate karma on your part I will do something very unpleasant to you for the suffering I'm going through!

Flashforward to five years!

Currently I have no idea about what to do in the future.. and from the way I'm going it looks like in five years I will be in Sri Lanka!!!!! YAAYY!!
(I do that because I haven't been home for two years!!)

I'm starting my third year of college this August and technically I only have two more years to graduate. But from my current standing of number of credit hours I'll have to study for three years probably. And I'll be 24 years old! -_-

I plan to go home after I graduate; and find a job here or in Sri Lanka. So in five years I'll be (hopefully) employed and taking a vacation, or employed and living in my hometown.

I'm in a fork road of my future about whether to live here or to go back home. If I'm going to do a job in the USA I want to live in a city! (sorry Kirksville). But I want to live in Sri Lanka too! But I'll probably decide on it when the time comes, hopefully. `
